Last week, Zohran Mamdani became New York’s mayor-elect, making him the first Asian-born and youngest mayor the state has seen in over 100 years. Mamdani’s political agenda includes objectives aimed towards making New York City a place for its people through rent stabilization, transportation benefits and universal childcare, and he’s also got a slew of more creative ways to celebrate this city in style.

One task he’s set out to accomplish lies in attacking the

“halalflation” crisis New York experiences, where chicken over rice prices have increased to drastic levels. Waiting…’s team relies on quick, delicious bites to keep our energy up through long work sessions, so we’re on board with a cheaper enjoyment of halal food.

Here to comment on just how much of a staple halal is to the city and its people, our photographer, Dillon Gadoury, gives a review of Mido’s on 58th and 9th. ‍

Like all good things in the city, Mido's Halal closes at 4am. I used to live by Columbus Circle and would stop by after movies at Lincoln Center or during a drunk night out; now I find myself crossing boroughs just to taste Mido's sweet meat once again. It's halal, keep it simple: combination over spicy rice, white sauce, three lines of red and green sauce to the moon.

It's the little things that make Mido's really shine. Bell peppers and jalapeños woven into the greens, french fries separating the meat, all topped with a falafel for the road. Above all else, you have to stand on a stool to order your plate. It's sort of like a ceremony, like the first step to heaven. 9.4 out of 10.
