Alboreo’s pieces exude bright, visceral and often grotesque imagery. Several of her canvases portray a WWE wrestling ring, an environment of both performative spectacle and touching intimacy. “power bomb” and “continuing to hammer away” take their titles from the sport as oil painted wrestling limbs simultaneously evoke sexuality and resemble tree branches and roots. In “heavy toward each other,” what registers as an explosion of neon from afar transforms with a closer look into an intricate network of veins and arteries, overlaying an entanglement of arms underneath. The bloody streams lay atop the body parts like a sheer fabric, maybe the type that Lagoon would implement in a shirt or dress.

Alboreo grew up as a Mormon in Ohio before attending graduate school in Florida and later moving to New York. Her work as an artist promotes an ideal of sanctifying the body over the soul, which contradicts teachings she knew as a young woman. The paintings she creates fundamentally contradict her upbringing, and she’s mastered toeing the line between her past and present relationships with bodies. Alboreo sees her work as existing within the physical, material realm, yet an interdimensional quality begs for attention, as well. As an audience, we are brought to the edge of reality, looking out across the abyss of that which does not exist. Then, gently, we are coaxed back into the land of the living where eternal souls have no presence, left questioning the catalyst behind such patterns and overlaps. This push and pull of physicality and abstraction marks a dominant paradox in Alboreo’s work. In “my nipples were thinking of you,” three arms cascade into a trio of breasts before fading into silky ends where hands normally would belong. Alboreo experiments with bodily elements in a joyful and irreverent manner, palpable through the canvas. Is she playing God, or simply making the most of what this material realm has to offer? ∎
Alboreo’s paintings are priced to sell. Prices range from $65 for a 4 x 5.5 inch cedar wall panel to $900 for a 24x24 oil painting.
